Five prestigious awards will be presented by the American Foundry Society (AFS) at the 113th Metalcasting Congress:
- Thomas W. Pangborn Gold Medal
- AFS Awards of Scientific Merit
- AFS Service Citation
- Ray H. Witt Award
- Howard F. Taylor Award
The Thomas W. Pangborn Gold Medal will be presented to Victor S. LaFay, Research & Technical Development Manager NA, S&B Industrial Minerals NA, Inc., for leadership in the technical development of green sand molding and methods which has propelled this technology to meet the future demands of the metalcasting industry through improvements in environmental applications, sustainable raw materials and foundry education. The AFS Awards of Scientific Merit will be presented to David A. Caulk, Technical Fellow, General Motors Research and Development Center, and Dr. Sam Ramrattan, Prof. in the Department of Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Western Michigan Univ. David A. Caulk will receive the award for outstanding technical contributions to the lost foam casting industry and contributions associated with the development of mathematical decomposition models for lost foam patterns for alumnium castings. Dr. Sam Ramrattan will receive the award for dedication and committment to educating students preparing to enter the metalcasting industry, and for developing new equipment and technology to monitor and identify variables that affect the consistency and quality of castings. The AFS Service Citation will be awarded to Harold Hoak, (retired) for fifty years of extraordinary service to AFS, and more than thirty years of service to the Wisconsin Chapter as a past president, advisor and counselor to the chapter officers and board members. The Ray H. Witt Award is presented annually to recognize the authors of an AFS management or marketing-oriented paper that exhibits the greatest probability of favorably impacting the metalcasting industry. This year, Gerald Cole, Light Weight Strategies, LLC will be receiving this award for his paper titled Magnesium Vision 2020, A North American Automotive Strategic Vision for Magnesium. The Howard F. Taylor Award is presented to the authors of the technical paper with the longest lasting impact on the metalcasting industry. This year, Martin Barone and David Caulk, General Motors Research and Development Center will be receiving the award for their paper titled Analysis of Mold Filling in Lost Foam Casting of Aluminum: Methods & Examples - Part I and II.
Attendee/Exhibit Registrations Open for the 113th Congress, Hotel Cutt-Off Approaching Attendee and exhibitor registrations are open for the 113th Metalcasting Congress, which will be held April 7-10, 2009, at the Paris Hotel, Las Vegas. More than 1,800 key industry people from around the globe are expected to attend. Attendees will have the opportunity to sit in on more than 140 technical and management presentations intended to increase plant effectiveness and profitability. In addition, as many as 250 companies are expected to participate in the table top exhibitions, highlighting the latest in industry equipment. If you have not already made your hotel reservation, now is the time to do so as the housing cut-off is March 6. Rates have been reduced from $159 per night to $135 per night.
